Мальчик по имени Хосино Тэцуо после трагических происшествий остается один. Он слышал, что на других планетах ему могут дать механическое тело - тогда он сможет жить вечно и, возможно, отомстить за смерть своей матери, ставшей жертвой из-за прихоти аристократа. Для того чтобы его получить, ему необходимо попасть на Галактический Экспресс- поезд, путешествующий между планетами. Чудом он попадает на Экспресс 999 и в компании Мэйтел, загадочной и прекрасной женщины, начинает долгий путь. Каждое место по-своему привлекает, и хранит свои опасности и печаль.
